Cabinet Spokesperson and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday denied receiving a resignation letter from Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the UK Dr. Chris Nonis. Responding to reporters at the Cabinet press briefing Tuesday, Minister Rambukwella said Dr. Nonis had not tendered his resignation to the Ministry of External Affairs as some media reports have claimed. The Minister, who earlier said the envoy had resigned, made the clarification that no resignation letter has been received after consulting by phone with the External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris Several media outlets yesterday reported that Dr. Nonis submitted his resignation after a Government MP overseeing the External Affairs Ministry assaulted him at a gathering in New York when they were in the city to attend the UN General Assembly. The reports quoting a senior official at the ministry said the letter was handed over three days ago following the assault but it was not clear whether the Government has accepted it while another media report said the President has refused to accept it.
