Four years after the end of the war, the military has demolished Vellupillai Prabhakaran’s home and bunker in the former conflict zone of the Wanni. Residents in the area confirmed that the bunker in Puthukuduirrippu in Mullaitivu had been demolished following a massive explosion on Thursday evening at around 6:40 p.m., the Jaffna based Uthayan newspaper reports. “We demolished Prabhakaran’s bunker at the first possible moment – is there any reason for us to keep the ghost of a terrorist alive?” Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya told the Daily FT yesterday. Asked why the military chose to destroy the bunker four years after the end of the war, the Military Spokesman said the bunker could not be demolished using explosives for fear of other unexploded devices in the region detonating at the same frequency. “We call it sympathetic detonations – but now that the area is completely cleared we were able to use explosives to destroy it and it was done,” Brigadier Wanigasooriya confirmed. The LTTE Leader’s bunker, said to reflect his opulent lifestyle, was a major attraction on the security forces operated Tiger tourism trail in the formerly embattled north since 2009.
