Wildlife Minister S.M. Chandrasena could not resist a dig at the UNP during the press conference to release census statistics.
When questioned by the media as to why elephants are released for Perahara’s he quipped that there was a difference between elephants used to drag loads and do heavy work and elephants used in processions.
“You can see the “elephants” at Sirikotha having a difficult time discerning between the elephants that go in Perehara’s and those made to do all the work. It seems to be a common confusion for two legged elephants,” he commented adding in a more somber tone that they would screen elephants released for processions better.
