Councillor Nizam Ismail, a Sri Lankan Muslim, has been recently elected as the new Mayor of Harrow.

Ismail, a long-time member of the London borough of Harrow, representing the Queensbury ward, was elected as the new Mayor of Harrow. He is the first Sri Lankan origin Muslim Mayor in this country.

Harrow boasts of being one of the most multicultural boroughs in the country and a few years ago another Councillor of Sri Lankan origin, Mano Dharmarajah, was Mayor of this borough. Harrow hosts a great many Sri Lankans of various ethnicities.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in the UK Dr. Chris Nonis and Chief Sangha Nayaka of the UK Venerable Agamahapandita Galayaye Piyadassi were among the distinguished guests invited for the mayoral election. A large gathering of Sri Lankans came to the Harrow Civic Centre to witness the election.
