Pioneering business magazine LMD announced its annual ‘Businesspeople Of The Year’ awards on Wednesday, when it released the November issue to bookstores and supermarkets. The 2014 line-up includes 20 names, instead of the customary 10, because LMD says it believes “it is time to pay tribute to the ladies who have made the grade and hogged the headlines for the right reasons this year”. “In a sense, we’re levelling the playing field, because the gents have dominated our annual BOTY awards from day one,” LMD explains. The magazines adds: “The top picks this year represent an array of sectors ranging from jewellery and apparel, to consumer electronics, exports, banking, real estate, tourism, conglomerates and the professions – including the world of fashion, mind you. They demonstrate multiple management styles and approaches to conducting business, with some displaying a greater capacity for breaking convention than others, and others proving that slow and steady can also win races.” “A humanitarian streak is also evident among some of them, who have gone beyond their traditional job descriptions to give back to the community and beyond. And most, if not all, of the ladies and gentlemen on the BOTY 2014 roll call of honour also project an ethical business ethos, which is amongst the key criteria for making the (BOTY) grade, so to speak,” LMD states. LMD is the flagship of Media Services, which also publishes the LMD 100, Most Respected, Brands Annual, Living, Living Colombo Guide and Dirimaga. Media Services also presents the twice-monthly business show, Benchmark, which airs on DialogTV (Nenasa 11), LBN (Bloomberg channel), peoTV and LMDtv.
