The Lanka Sama Samaja Party has called for explanation from its National Organiser Y.G. Padmasiri about his decision to vote in favour of the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake in Parliament on 11 January, despite the Leftist Party’s politburo having decided it would not support the Government’s removal of the top Judge.

Padmasiri is to file his explanations by 31 January, the Daily FT learns.

LSSP Leader and Senior Government Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana abstained from voting on the impeachment, in accordance with the wishes of his party’s Central Committee.

The Communist Party, headed by Senior Minister D.E.W. Gunesekera and CP MP Chandrasiri Gajadeera, also abstained from voting on the impeachment.
