President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to address five political meetings in the north next month, Minister of Environment and the UPFA Secretary Susil Premajayanth said.
Accordingly, meetings have been scheduled to be held in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Jaffna in support of the UPFA candidates contesting the forthcoming northern Provincial Council elections.
Premajayanth, who is gearing up the campaign for the UPFA in the Jaffna District, addressing the media at his Jaffna office said that the President would address the Jaffna masses on 15 September at 10:30 a.m. at the Jaffna Duraiappah Stadium. The Vavuniya District meeting will be held on 9 September.
“On 14 September, there will be three meetings one after the other to be held in the Districts of Mannar, Kilinochchi and Puthukkudiyirippu in the Mullaitivu District,” the Minister told the media.
When asked about the violation of election rules in the Jaffna District, he emphasised that the UPFA had given special instruction to all candidates to stick to election rules and the guidelines issued by the Commissioner of Elections as well.
He also said that he has already instructed the Jaffna Police DIG and the Municipal Council to take all necessary action within their purview to strictly adhere to the laws of the country. Accordingly the Minister said that he requested both the Police and the Jaffna Municipal Council to take immediate action to remove all unauthorised election campaign material inclusive of symbols drawn on the streets in the Jaffna District.
