The Southern European republic of Malta will host the Commonwealth summit in 2015 following an unanimous decision yesterday by heads of government gathered to attend the summit in Colombo.
CHOGM 2015 was left without a host after Mauritius boycotted the Colombo summit at the last minute citing Sri Lanka’s human rights record.
Mauritius was to be the 2015 host of the meeting of world leaders. However a head of Government must be in attendance at the last summit in order to be eligible to host CHOGM two years later, according to Commonwealth Secretariat sources.
Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who attended CHOGM in Colombo tweeted: “We are convinced our people will rise again to the occasion.”
Countries usually have four years to prepare for the summit.
Malta also hosted CHOGM in 2005.
New Zealand had also shown some initial interest in hosting the 2015 summit. (DB)
