Mawbima Lanka Padanama makes global appeal against unfair motion at UNHRC

Mawbima Lanka Padanama (MLP) yesterday made a global appeal against the unfair motion on Sri Lanka at the on-going 22nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR).

The appeal was via written representations to all the foreign missions based in Sri Lanka. MLP requested the missions to say no to the proposed motion against Sri Lanka at the 22nd Session of the UNHCR.

It described the motion as “unfair and vicious.”

Mawbima Lanka Foundation is a non-government, non-profit organisation that has come forward to protect the interests of indigenous Sri Lankans for almost a decade in Sri Lanka. Today, we consider that it is our prime responsibility to raise a strong voice against an extremely biased approach by UNHRC headed by Navanethem Pillay, that we believe is going to derail the progress of our country of 20 million people.

Sri Lanka’s 20 million population is multiethnic with approximately 15 million Sinhalese, three million Tamils, and two million of others including Muslims. These races had lived in harmony for thousands of years till the British invaded our country and made it a colony in 1815 and introduced the principle of ‘divide and rule’ that created a racial division between the Sinhalese and Tamils in Lanka, which was called Ceylon in their time of rule.

Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948 but within few decades had to face effects of brutal terrorism. Supported by some of the Tamil Diaspora in the world, a Tamil terrorist group named LTTE from the north of Sri Lanka fought a bloody war for almost 30 years since 1980, till the Sri Lankan Government defeated LTTE on 19 May 2009.

Since the defeat of LTTE, all the people in Sri Lanka, including Tamils, live peacefully in Sri Lanka as now there are no bombs and suicide killings in Sri Lanka. People of all communities are enjoying peace. In fact, about 40% of the population of the capital city of Colombo comprise of Tamils.

Sri Lanka has achieved a very peaceful era after 30 years and all the people of all races are now living in harmony without any fear of bombs and other terrorist activities. The Tamil civilians in the north and east are happy that their children are not kidnapped by the LTTE to recruit as child soldiers.

The Government of Sri Lanka is spending hundreds of million dollars to reconstruct the war-torn areas and it is very evident that the north and east are developing faster than the other parts of the country. It is estimated that Sri Lankan per capita income will reach US$ 4,000 by 2016 if peace prevails in the country.

The peace in post war Sri Lanka has not favoured some members of the Tamil Diaspora, and they have, with the help of few members of parliaments in the Western countries who are dependent on the Tamil vote base, made false human rights violation charges against Sri Lanka.

The said Tamil Diaspora connected to the LTTE has sought undue advantage from UNHRC, which is headed by Navanethem Pillay who too is an ethnic Tamil, who has now made it a practice to launch attack after attack on Sri Lanka at UNHRC meetings. Backed by the warmongers who directly benefitted from the war in Sri Lanka, the Tamil Diaspora is keen to see that peace in Sri Lanka is destroyed for their personal gains.

Whilst making these false charges against Sri Lanka, that are alleged to have happened during a terrorist war against a democratically elected government in Sri Lanka, Navanethem Pillay completely ignores blatant human right violations in many other places in the world.

Anyone who reads newspapers can see the extent of human rights violations taking place in many countries in the world for which Navanethem Pillay has no concern whatsoever. This clearly shows the vested interests of Navanethem Pillay and her continuing animosity against Sri Lanka.

Due to the above and the following reasons, we denounce this institutional war against Sri Lanka by Navanethem Pillay, backed by the Tamil Diaspora linked to LTTE rump.

During the 30 years of war, the abovementioned international forces did not come forward to resolve our problem or to liberate the Sri Lankan Tamil community from the clutches of the LTTE. Sri Lankans have made heavy sacrifices for over 30 years and now shall be allowed to enjoy the peace that they have won by defeating the ruthless terrorists.

Most of the Tamil civilians in the north and the east of Sri Lanka are enjoying the peaceful developments that are taking place in their hometowns and will not like to see another war in their areas.

In the recent past, countries such as Iraq, Egypt and Libya have ended up in total chaos and innocent civilians are getting killed in large numbers every month for the sake of political and economic gains of a few other countries.

The attempts by Navanethem Pillay and the Tamil Diaspora to destabilise the smooth running of Sri Lanka will affect normal civilian life in Sri Lanka and also negatively affect all business concerns. We strongly believe that this resolution has an ulterior motive of bringing in a regime change in Sri Lanka and will destabilise the country once again

It is a clear fact that Sri Lanka has a democratically elected president with more than 60% of the votes and also a popular government with over 2/3 majority in the Parliament. The people of Sri Lanka would resist such an attempt for a regime change with the intervention of foreign powers.

The ultimate result of the motion against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, if executed, will be another civil war in Sri Lanka that will only benefit the arms dealers and the warmongers

We are aware that your country is a direct beneficiary of the peaceful trading conditions that prevail in Sri Lanka and another civil war in Sri Lanka will not benefit you at all, unless any country is planning to sell arms to Sri Lanka in a civil war situation.

Therefore, we kindly appeal to you to persuade your country to be bold enough to say ‘no’ to this unfair and vicious motion against Sri Lanka at the forthcoming UNHRC meeting and let Sri Lanka prosper in peace.
