UNP MP Dr. Harsha De Silva yesterday alleged that there were massive discrepancies in the Central Bank data of May 2011 which hadn’t been explained.
“For instance, the Central Bank loudly announced in May 2011 that for the first time export income had surpassed US$ 1,000 million a month in March with apparel exports rising to US$ 473 million in that month. But, somewhere along the way the Central Bank has very quietly revised this figure from US$ 473 million to US$ 362 million; close to a 25% adjustment and in the process debunking the tall story of the US$ 1,000 million-achievement without explaining why such a large revision was effected. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions in the past the authorities have a moral obligation to explain such large adjustments,” Dr. De Silva said.
