Military owes over Rs. 10 b to food suppliers

Contractors who supplied food to the Sri Lanka security forces say that they have not been paid for over a year for the food supplies. The military owes over Rs. 10 billion to a number of leading supply contractors of the country for the food supplied, according to a report in our sister paper, the Sunday Lankadeepa. The contractors point out that the Army owes over Rs. 10 billion since January while the Navy owes Rs. 2.5 billion since February and Air Force dues amount to Rs. 1 billion since March this year. A senior officer in the financial management of the Army told the newspaper that Rs. 10 billion has been requested from the Government to settle the bills. An Air Force accountant said the bills have been prepared until May and only Rs. 230 million is due for the period.
