The second phase of the ‘Mihindusen Pura’ housing scheme for low income families was launched on Thursday.
Making an inspection visit, Secretary Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited the construction site.
Under the first phase of the ‘Mihindusen Pura’ housing scheme, 500 housing units were handed over to slum dwellers in Dematagoda in Colombo. The apartment complexes are built conforming to national standards and each unit costs Rs. 7 million to build.
Under the second phase 600 housing units will be built and in addition public amenities such as medical services, sports and recreational facilities and pre-school will also be built.
Under the multifaceted Colombo Development Project, slum dwellers and squatters occupying mostly the environmentally-sensitive marsh land or canal banks will be provided with proper living spaces. Houses will be built in the vicinity of the present locale of these people, thereby reducing complications caused by relocation.
In order to overcome the people’s socio-economic problems, the Government has implemented a program to find ways of improving their living standards by providing them with proper living environments. As a sustainable solution for this problem the Government aims at building 70,000 houses for low income families in Colombo.
At present more than 15,000 housing units are being constructed in several parts of the city including Henamulla, Aluthmawatha, Ferguson Road, Cyril C. Perera Mawatha, Edirisinghe Mawatha, Maligawatte Railway land, Estate 31-Orugodawatta site, Estate 54 and 66, Kolonnawa Government factory land, Salamulla and Angoda. Constructions will be carried out in keeping with the clean, green and people friendly city concept.
The project is carried out under the direct supervision of Secretary Defence.
