The highly anticipated Code of Ethics for lawmakers will be tabled in Parliament today to prevent Members from assaulting, harassing and intimidating each other during sittings.

The draft that is to be tabled was prepared by the Legal Draftsman in par with the Standing Orders of Parliament and in consultation with the Committee on Standing Orders.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, who took a leadership role in bringing the proposed Code of Ethics for Members, believes the questionable behaviour of certain Parliamentarians damages the respect and public recognition enjoyed by the House. Once tabled, the Code of Ethics will be taken into consideration after Parliament meets on 9 January next year. (AH)
