President Mahinda Rajapaksa has accepted the resignation letter of Minister Mervyn Silva from the post of Chief Organiser for the Kelaniya electorate.

The move follows requests from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) from Silva, who is the Minister of Public Relations.

The SLFP has decided to remove Minister Silva from the post of electoral organiser until the investigations into the murder of Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Hasitha Madawala are finished.

Minister Silva, who is known for notoriety and media hype, has been accused of the murder by the members of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha, which was on a collision course with the Minister.

The party has decided to appoint Gampaha District organiser Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa as the electoral organiser of Kelaniya.

Five suspects have been arrested by the Police for the murder and they include several officials of Minister Silva’s staff.
