Much-hyped M&M meeting billed for today

By Chamodi Gunawardana   The much anticipated meeting between President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is billed to take place today though members from certain political circles expressed doubt over it going ahead. Speculation is that the meeting is scheduled to take place at 1.00 p.m. at the President’s Office in Parliament complex. Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Media Spokesperson Dilan Perera confirmed to the Daily FT that the meeting would take place today though he refused to reveal when as it was scheduled to take place at an auspicious time. He added that it would take place at a venue which was friendly and welcoming to the SLFP.   President Sirisena’s Media Director Dharmasri Bandara said that they had not been informed about such a meeting. However, former the President’s Media Coordinator Rohan Welivita confirmed to the Daily FT that today’s meeting between the two presidents was likely to take place though he was unaware of the time or venue. According to reports, the Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharsana Yapa and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha will accompany President Sirisena whilst broker to the meeting MP Kumara Welgama, Dullas Alahapperuma and Bandula Gunawardana will accompany Rajapaksa.   The speculated meeting, the first between the two since the 8 January presidential poll, is being pushed by certain politicians while discouraged by others. Some noted the two should not meet at all while others opined that such a meeting would be good for the country’s political climate.
