The Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka has appointed Muhunthan Canagey as CEO and Managing Director for a second term.
Canagey was first appointed to the Board of ICTA with the change of Government in February 2015 as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to head the agency. He was entrusted with the task of restructuring and spearheading the architecturing, facilitating and implementing of ‘Digital Sri Lanka’. The program was created in line with the national policy statement issued by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for building the digital economy. The ICT Agency which was founded in 2003 as the apex ICT policy making, implementation and facilitation body in Sri Lanka under the aegis of the World Bank and has now been restructured under his executive office to handle and implement projects for cash disbursement to the value of Rs. 15 billion for 2017, which was allocated under the National Budget for 2017.
Minister for Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando said that Canagey’s appointment had been made in consultation with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, along with his concurrence and thereafter the decision was conveyed to the Board of Directors of ICTA for the reappointment of Muhunthan as MD/CEO.
The ICT Agency is expected to handle the architecture and implementation of large scale projects which will drive Sri Lanka into the digital future. The agency has over 80 projects planned and initiated for driving the digital economy and building greater efficiency and transparency within and outside Government by using digital technologies. The agency is also building and supporting the digital startup eco system with a culture of innovation, creativity and productisation in the society, with the belief that the future for Sri Lanka is based on an ‘Imagination’ age.
Canagey has been in the field of technology from the age of 12 and founded his first company at the age of 16 and subsequently founded many successful technology companies including a media company covering every part of every home in Sri Lanka using satellite technology. Canagey has an in depth knowledge of financial and business management and has a Masters in Information Technology from Keele University UK.
