Muslim Ministers in the ruling UPFA coalition yesterday issued a scathing statement, slamming the Government’s “lukewarm and ineffective” measures to curb anti-Muslim violence that they claimed had strengthened extremist groups spreading chaos in the country.
“The lukewarm and ineffective measures taken by the law enforcement agencies on previous occasions... seem to have emboldened some extremist groups who seem to determined to create chaos in the country,” the Muslim Ministers who gathered at the residence of Senior SLFP Minister A.H.M. Fowzie last afternoon said in a joint statement.
The Ministers, who also wrote a strong letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, demanded that the Government take action to prosecute and punish those acting against national unity. The joint statement was signed by all Muslim ministers and deputy ministers in the Government with the exception of Minister A.L.M. Athaullah and Deputy Minister A.R.M. Abdul Cader.
