Dr. Nalaka Godahewa has tendered his resignation as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday and his successor Tilak Karunaratne is tipped to take over this week. The letter of appointment was dispatched to Karunaratne yesterday by Secretary to Ministry of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs Prof. Kithsiri Liyanage. The SEC was taken over from Finance Ministry and brought under the Ministry held by Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe to ensure better governance. Karunaratna confirmed the receipt of the appointment letter but noted exact date of assuming duties is yet to be decided. Dr. Godahewa exits after a two year stint and among the key contributions he made was championing the 10-point capital markets development initiative as well as bringing stability initially and thereafter ensuring solid growth especially with record foreign inflows. For Karunaratne it will be a resumption of his office from which he resigned after serving around nine months originally sighting external interferences way back in August 2012.
