National Housing Policy debuts today to mark World Habitat Day

The Government will launch a National Housing Policy today to mark World Habitat Day 2014 at a ceremony to be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The National Housing Policy will be presented to the President at the World Habitat Day national ceremony which will be held this year under the theme ‘Voice from slums and future from Janasevana’. The policy is aimed at ensuring the public’s right to live in stable, qualitative, affordable, sustainable, secure and eco-friendly houses. The Cabinet has given its approval to the policy, which has been drafted with the help of 25 ministries. The Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, which is primarily responsible for formulating policies related to the Janasevana National Housing Program and implementation of its programs, has launched a one million housing and settlement development drive to fulfil national housing requirements. At the ceremony today, the President will also hand over title deeds to 500 landless families in Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha Districts. Awards will also be presented at the ceremony to the winners of the island wide essay and art competition held at the school level for the World Habitat Day. Coinciding with the World Habitat Day a program to develop skills of children living in underprivileged conditions will also be implemented today.
