The Cabinet this week approved a proposal from Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa to instruct the Legal Draftsman to come up with new legislation to set up a department for the Government’s ‘Divi Neguma’ program.

This was sequel to the Cabinet previously approving the establishment of the Department of Divi Neguma Combined Rural Development, amalgamating the Department of the Samurdhi Commissioner General, Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority, Department of Upcountry Peasantry Rehabilitation, Sri Lanka Udarata Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Southern Development Authority.

This was to accelerate the development activities of the Government via the popular ‘Divi Neguma’ initiative.
