Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced that Parliament will meet at 2:00 p.m. today on a request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to debate the fiasco concerning the removal and appointment of Chief Justices.
Accordingly, Parliament will meet on 2 February at 2:00 p.m.
Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dassanayaka told media that a special debate on the appointment and removal of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris will be held on Monday.
A heated debate took place in Parliament last Friday when the Opposition requested a debate following Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s special statement on the ousting of Mohan Peiris from the post of Chief Justice.
The argument over the debate date led the Speaker to suspend the sittings twice on Friday and when lawmakers could not come to an agreement the Speaker adjourned the sittings for the day.
