Hinting he would soon end his illustrious career in public service, Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera on Wednesday said he would like put all industries into one platform for a common voice before end of his tenure. Addressing the first post-business session held by JAAF at the conclusion of its 10th AGM, Dr. Jayasundera asserted that his dream was to mobilise industry and entrepreneurial spirit on to one platform, following the footsteps of the forum. “If we have one JAAF for the whole country and talk and envision in one voice… that is what we need for growth.” His 40-year term in the public sector has made him realise that what the country now needs is ‘one platform, one voice’ for exports to boom. “In my last few days in the public sector, I want to mobilise entrepreneurial spirit to one platform, taking JAAF’s example,” Jayasundera said. “If we have one JAAF for the whole country, and we can talk one export economy, one target and a vision with no different interpretations but one – if we deliver in that direction, what (Singapore’s Founding Prime Minister) Lee Kwan Yew did there could happen here.” His dream is to maintain single digit VAT, he divulged. That is what sets Singapore apart from others as there is no ‘grumble’. “You need simplicity, quick business.” Multi-country value chain is also important. Sri Lanka must move beyond value chain in the country, and look at a broader, more global, multi-country supply chain. This would place Sri Lanka on par with the likes of USA and China. The necessary windows are now being implemented to further this need.
