Legal attempts to stall the Northern Provincial Council election scheduled for Saturday (21) failed yesterday when the Supreme Court declined to suspend the poll but issued notice on the Tamil National Alliance and other respondents over petitions that alleged the party’s manifesto was unconstitutional.
The Petitions filed by Patriotic National Movement representative Gunadasa Amarasekera and four others under Article 157 (4) A of the Constitution claim the TNA manifesto violates the sixth amendment to the constitution that prohibits any political organisation from having as one of its aims the creation of a separate state within Sri Lanka.
The petitions cite ITAK General Secretary Mavai Senathirajah, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and the Attorney General as respondents.
A three judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, noticed the respondents to appear before court on 2 October. (DB)
