Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne yesterday justified the 2014 Budget support for dogs via low duty imported pet food. “It is good to be able to treat the dogs in Sri Lanka by reducing the tax on imported pet food. The dog is an important animal to us. It helps us to catch thieves and to curb crime. Recently an intruder at the former Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake’s house was bitten by a horse raised. He would have been bitten more if it was a dog! The Police force use sniffer dogs and spend a lot on their welfare. They are treated well with uniforms. I don’t mind spending more on dogs compared to what was spent on dogs,” said Prime Minister Jayaratne. Focusing on the overall benefits of Budget 2014, the Prime Minister added: “Budget 2014 has kept the requirements to establish democracy in the country including the rule of law. Efforts are taken to increase foreign investment in Sri Lanka. CHOGM 2013 is a long term strategy. It is more like the ayurvedic treatment that takes time to show result when compared to western medications. “The females are offered interest free financial facilities to engage in small scale businesses. Budget 2014 assures us all a better future. There are 22 separate divisions, which come under the President. So, it is legitimate for him to seek more money,” the PM concluded.
