Police investigators last evening arrested the suspect in the brutal murder of Journalist Mel Gunasekera in the Dompe area within about 12 hours after the killing took place.
Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said last night that Gunasekera’s Blackberry phone had been in the suspect’s possession.
He said the suspect had worked as a mason at the slain journalist’s residence for a period of about one month and had observed that the family attended church every Sunday between 6-8 a.m.
“He had decided to break into the house at that time. Unfortunately this Sunday Ms. Mel was in her home and she may have recognised the suspect, leading to the stabbing,” SSP Rohana said.
The Police Spokesman said that CCTV footage and other evidence had been highly valuable in tracing the murder suspect.
