Polls Chief accepts BASL proposals on ensuring transparent count

Polls Chief Mahinda Deshapriya has accepted a set of proposals recommended by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka to ensure transparency of the counting process on Thursday.
BASL President Attorney-at-Law Upul Jayasuriya said all the proposals forwarded by the Association to the Polls Chief had been accepted.
As part of the recommendations, polls monitors will be informed of the results of counting centres before results are officially announced.
Counting sheets of each room in the centres will be posted on a wall for observation by monitors before it is handed over to a Returning Officers.
The BASL proposals were drafted with broad consultations with local polls monitors, including PAFFREL and CaFFE.
For the first time in Sri Lankan election history, election observers will be permitted to observe the counting in 300 counting centres around the island.
The Elections Department has set up 1,115 counting centers around the country on election night. (DB)
