Port operations carried out as usual; probe in progress into fire at CFS

Investigations are in progress into the fire that broke out at Container Freight Station – 01 (CFS – 01) at the Port of Colombo on 24 May during the early morning hours.

The premise is under complete Police security and several units including the Colombo Crime Investigations Unit of the Police are carrying out investigations. Government Analyst Sarath Gunathilake who arrived at the scene had also conducted investigations into the incident.

SLPA said over 50 inquiries made by customers have been recorded by 26 May 2013 at the special counter established in this regard at the Logistic Division of SLPA. The centre enables customers to receive information on LCL cargo imported at the Port of Colombo. SLPA has taken steps to inform the customers of the exact place a TEU is positioned by giving the TEU number at the counter.

Minister of Port and Highways (Projects) Rohitha Abeygunawardane who arrived at the place when the incident occurred instructed the SLPA on further measures to be taken.

Accordingly, under instructions of SLPA Chairman Dr. Priyath B. Wickrama, higher officers of SLPA have made arrangements in this regard whilst work is in progress to carry out consolation to customers for the damaged cargo due. According to rules and regulations pertaining to incidents like this, SLPA will arrange all possible measures to extend maximum consolation to its customers.

At present, all operations at SLPA and the Port of Colombo are being carried out as usual without any interruptions or delays.
