President consults scholars and intellectuals on economic plans

A special meeting to get ideas, proposals and suggestions from economists, scholars and public officials for the formulation of future economic plans to build a content and peaceful society and an exemplary nation with high income by achieving sustainable development by 2030 was held on Thursday under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The discussion themed ‘Economy and the Way Forward of Sri Lanka’ involved Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Secretary to the President P. B. Abeykoon, secretaries to the ministries, senior Government officials, university lecturers and professors.

They discussed ways to formulate plans to achieve future development goals.

Sri Lanka’s mid-term goal is to generate million job opportunities, increase the income level of the people, develop the rural economy and build a broad and strong middle class. The scholars presented their ideas on the ways and means to achieve those goals.

President Sirisena stated that future development and economic plans would be made by recognising the shortfalls of the Government through such discussions in which Government officials, scholars and intellectuals could present their ideas freely.
