President Mahinda Rajapaksa who made an inspection tour of farmlands in the drought-stricken Polonnaruwa has directed authorities to provide several immediate relief measures.

The President directed the authorities in the Finance ministry not to recover the loan given to farmers in the drought hit areas until the end of 2012/2013 Maha season. He also ordered the suspension of the interest for pawned items by such farmers during the same period. Accordingly the Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank and the Co-operative banks will provide this relief to the farmers.

The President on Tuesday made an observation tour of farmland at Unagala Vehera and Atthana Kadawala areas in the Polonnaruwa district and gave a patient hearing to farmers who have been affected by the prevailing drought.

The Government has already taken several relief measures to provide relief to farmers in the drought hit districts. Seven districts have been earmarked as hit by drought and the seed paddy is to be given free of charge to these farmers for the next season. Work for money is another interim measure adopted by the government and under this a person from each family will get Rs. 6000 per month for the work done by them.
