President Maithripala Sirisena has said that, even though those who were removed from power by the people are launching many conspiracies by dreaming to come to power again, nobody will be able to topple the current Government.

“The Government is proceeding according to the constitution and the law of the land. Nobody can stop the Government’s journey towards the betterment of the country with its long term political experience,” he said.Untitled-6

The President was speaking at a public meeting in Ibbagamuwa earlier this week. The meeting was held following a visit to the Learning Resource Center at the Hameedia Muslim School in Kumbalganga, Ibbagamuwa.

Commenting on the strike by the workers of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), the President said the public has been inconvenienced by the trade union action. “Any problem can be solved through discussion. I request them to stop the strike and report to duty. Doctors also have taken up strike as a game today. It’s regrettable that they show such little regard for human life,” he said.

President Sirisena also pointed out there is a misconception among the people on the proposed agreement with a Chinese company on the Hambantota Port.

He assured the audience that he will not allow even one inch of the country to be sold to any other country or company through a deed or by any other means.

“It was the last regime which transferred our lands to other countries. No ruler in the past had done such a thing. They handed over ownership of 200 acres through a deed to a Chinese company. It is the current Government which transferred it into a tenancy,” the President said. “Nobody wanted to strike or protest against such decisions those days. Today, everybody has the freedom to go on strike and protest. But we can’t let majority of people to suffer due to the activities of a small group of people”, he stressed.

According to Sirisena, the Government will issue a statement on a number of activities for the welfare of the public within the next few years. This statement will be issued next month when it marks the Yahapalana Government completion of two years since its election, he said.
