The May issue of LMD reports on a nationwide survey carried out by TNS Lanka on the public’s perceptions of local elections, with the recently-concluded provincial council elections under the microscope.
“In the latest LMD-TNS Lanka survey, nearly seven out of 10 respondents confirm a belief that local provincial council elections are very important, with only 20% failing to accept this premise while another 11% are simply ‘unsure’ as to whether it is a worthwhile endeavour,” the pioneering business magazine reports.
But not as many of those polled are convinced that the financial outlay for such elections is reasonable, it adds: “More than half (53%) of the survey sample claim that expenditure on PC elections is not reasonable, and point to the unnecessarily high costs related to posters, cut-outs and fireworks.”
Poll respondents also told TNS Lanka that “Sri Lanka’s electoral process will benefit from fair elections, candidates with good educational qualifications being appointed, a tightening of election laws and proper enforcement of the same, as well as those who truly care for the public entering local politics.”
The May edition of LMD features the magazine’s take on the Geneva Resolution, including the thoughts of former UN Secretary General contender Jayantha Dhanapala (the lead story is now on LMD’s website – www.LMD.lk).
