The Government is to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate attempts by certain groups to incite communal tensions and religious fanaticism in the country.

Leader of the House Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament yesterday that a select committee would be tasked with looking into groups that were trying to incite extremism among the communities that are co-existing peacefully in the country.

De Silva made the statement in response to questions posed by DNA Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding an explosion of intolerance against the Muslim community led by a group calling itself Bodhu Bala Sena.

Last week, monks leading the movement attempted to storm a Muslim owned enterprise in Maharagama as part of the dangerous rise in anti-Muslim sentiments.
