The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has announced the approved electricity tariffs, in line with the Government policy directive on the reduction of electricity tariffs for the domestic sector. The new electricity rates will retroactively be effective from 16 September. According to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s instructions, the new domestic rates have been reduced by 25%. Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman W.B. Ganegala said the 25% reduction will be taken from the next month’s electricity bills of domestic consumers. Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella said the reduction was applicable islandwide to all households and reports that say it would only be applied for those who consume less than 300 units were baseless. The details of the reduced tariff structure are available on the Public Utilities Commission’s website.
