The Directors of the Kandy Hotels Co PLC yesterday announced that it will be closing down the public bars of the Queen’s Hotel, Kandy with immediate effect.
The Queen’s Hotel is supporting the President’s vision to ensure a sacred area in the vicinity of the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
This decision was taken in line with President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s vision to honour one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka.
The Queen’s Hotel is in close proximity of the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is considered a site of great reverence by Buddhists the world over.
A spokesman said that the hotel was happy to support the President’s vision for Kandy, to ensure a sacred area.
“We believe that this is in line with the future development of Kandy and are fully supportive of the President and his plans,” he added.
The spokesman also noted that this date was picked in order to honour President Rajapaksa and wish him the very best on his birthday.
The Queen’s Hotel is considered a historic site of great archaeological value and has been conserved as an integral part of the history of Sri Lanka. The building was originally a Governor’s Mansion with smaller buildings surrounding the main structure and housing troops of the British Empire.
Today the Queen’s Hotel stands on one of the most prime properties in the city with an extent of 217.5 perches and is also one of the grandest and finest examples of architecture. The hotel offers 75 luxurious rooms overlooking some of the most spectacular scenery that the Central Province has to offer.
From its inception in 1895, Queen’s has housed royalty and celebrity alike. It also prides itself on of the oldest hotels in the country. The Queen’s Hotel is owned and operated by Kandy Hotel Co PLC and is a member of the Galle Face Group.
