Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake yesterday rejected the media reports alleging 700 undervalued vehicles being released with a concession in import duty payment.
“Importers of these vehicles paid the duty surcharge of 35%. We have also taken steps to detain undervalued containers. These will not be released unless the importers pay the actual duty,” Minister confirmed who mentioned 25 out of the 35 electric vehicles imported after the Budget 2016 were cleared by the importers and due consideration will be given for the remaining electric vehicles.
All Ceylon Customs Services Union (ACCSU) has lodged the complaint with the FCID regarding a large scale customs duty fraud amounting to over one billion rupees.
The fraud, according to the Union, has occurred, when a decision has taken to release 212 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TRJ vehicles imported by several vehicle importers. (AH)
