Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Chairman Suresh Shah, who was re-elected to head the Chamber for a second year during the institution’s 175th AGM, announced that the Chamber was planning to establish a program to help build “peace and harmony” in the country.
Addressing the members at the historic AGM held yesterday at the Chamber premises, Shah also said that the proposed program would focus on gaining the support of the local corporate sector.
“I call upon the private sector to contribute at least a part of their CSR funds towards a program that we will take islandwide to bring peace and harmony to society,” Shah revealed during his address.
The CCC’s latest move comes following the recent incidents which took place in Aluthgama, where unrest prevailed in the region.
“This is extremely unfortunate and I don’t think we need to point fingers at anyone, because at the end of the day, if there is unrest in our society, I think all of us need to take responsibility,” he further said.
A large number of representatives from the Chamber’s member companies, associations, business councils and invitees were present at the AGM.
Meanwhile, the AGM also saw the re-election of Samantha Ranatunga as the Vice Chairman and Rajendra Theagerajah as the Deputy vice Chairman.
