The attention of the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) has been drawn to providing information about the water level of the Mahaweli reservoirs via SMS using mobile phones.
ICTA says that this will be a great help to the farmer community for planning their agricultural activities in a systematic manner.
It has been planned to inform the farming community through SMS when the water level of the reservoirs goes down to 40 per cent as well as when it rises up to between 90 per cent and 95 per cent.
ICTA says that this facility will be pivotal in protecting the lives and properties of people living around these reservoirs when the reservoir water level rises to risky heights.
The Agency also says that it is expected to provide this service via the Government Information Centre (1919) as well.
