Reshuffling burden on the people: UNP

The increased size of the newly-reshuffled Cabinet will only increase the burden on the average Sri Lankan, the main Opposition UNP warned yesterday, just minutes before the new Ministers were scheduled to take oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

UNP Media Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilleke told a media conference yesterday that the reshuffle would only increase the economic burden on the people who would have to pay for the maintenance of even more Ministers in the jumbo Cabinet.

“It is the ordinary people who will have to fork out the petrol, water, electricity and living expenses for the Ministers,” he charged.

Karunathilleke said that a mere reshuffle would not get the country out of the rut the Government has placed it in. “It’s not a reshuffle that’s necessary but regime change,” he said.
