The main opposition United National Party yesterday reiterated its demand that the Government reveal who ordered the Army to fire into crowds of demonstrators in Weliweriya on 1 August, dismissing the disciplinary action against junior officers involved in the incident as eyewash. UNP National List MP Eran Wickremaratne told a news conference yesterday that the Rathupaswala controversy was directly related to the Government’s response to a civilian demonstration demanding clean water in the region. “When water was asked for, they responded with bullets, that is the crux of the crisis in Rathupaswala,” Wickremaratne charged. “Prosecuting junior officers will not do,” the UNP MP said, asking the Government to name senior officials responsible for the incident. “How did soldiers get orders to shoot in a massive civilian settlement?” he asked.
