Having made a name and mega bucks from the Colombo bourse, high net worth investor Nimal Perera has now sets sights on striking it big in the business of sports.

Nimal has floated a sports industry-focused N Sports Pvt. Ltd., which incidentally is also his first self-owned venture.

The inaugural deal of N Sports is owning the Sabaragamuwa Stallions rugby team for the Carlton Super Sevens 2011 organised by Carlton Sports Club and supported by the ‘Tharunyata Hetak’ initiative of MP Namal Rajapaksa.

Co-owners of the Sabaragamuwa team are Vallibel One Plc, Royal Ceramics Plc, LB Finance Plc and PABC Bank Plc.

N Sports along with Vallibel Group companies are among a host of corporates supporting Calton Super Sevens by owning or co-owning teams.

Nimal said he is passionate about sports whilst post-war there was great scope for the development and promotion of sports in the country on an international scale.

“I see great prospects for some of the popular sports such as rugby and cricket. We have also identified some leisure sports and sports entertainment activities,” Nimal added.

Nimal is currently the Honorary Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee.

Sabaragmuwa Stallions is captained by Saliya Handapangoda and apart from hiring a US coach, it also has several international players.

Featuring 10 franchises, the second leg of Carlton Super Sevens 2011 will take place over the weekend in Colombo whilst the first leg was concluded last week in Bogambara.
