Cabinet yesterday approved six contracts to build national highways, costing nearly Rs. 3 billion funded through loans which will be sourced from local banks. On a proposal made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, local contractors were given projects to rehabilitate, widen and improve roads around the country.
Under these measures, the roads that will be restored include the 20 kilometre Hasalaka-Handungamuwa-Hettipola road at a cost of Rs. 312 million, the 60 kilometre Kelanimulla-Mulleriyawa-Koswatta road at a price of Rs. 539.3, the 22 kilometre Kurunegala-Narammala-Madampe road at Rs. 744 million and the 3.9 kilometre Seeduwa-Katunayake road at Rs. 103 million.
The largest contract was awarded for the road from Seeduwa to Udugampola for Rs. 842 million. The three kilometre Jaffna-Ponnalai-Point Pedro road received a contract of Rs. 200 million. The road network connected to the development of the defence headquarters in Akuregoda was also allocated Rs. 185.8 million for 6.5 kilometre stretch.
