The new Oluvil Port Development project constructed at a cost of Rs. 7 billion was ceremoniously opened yesterday by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Construction of the Fishing Harbour and the Commercial Harbour began in Oluvil, Ampara, in 2008 under the Nagenahira Navodaya program.
The opening of the harbour will boost economic infrastructure activities in the Eastern Province.
The Commercial Harbour has enough depth to handle ships up to 5,000 metric tons and the Fisheries Harbour can hold more than 250 fishing boats simultaneously.
