A significant event in the interest of integrating business entities from the north to mainstream capital market operations was organised by the Yarlpanam (Jaffna) Chamber of Commerce last week. This forum was facilitated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) and the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in order to encourage companies to raise funds through the capital markets of Sri Lanka and derive the benefits of listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange. The event was attended by business leaders and respected community leaders of Jaffna including University professors and provincial council members and was followed by a discussion where several questions pertaining to funding issues faced by businesses in the north were raised and addressed. Chairman of the Yarlpanam Chamber of Commerce and Industries K. Pooranachandran expressed his gratitude for this initiative as part of an islandwide drive to avail local businesses the opportunity to gain the benefits of the capital market. A follow-up workshop to create and enhance awareness of corporate governance requirements is currently being planned in collaboration with the Chamber to further strengthen the positioning of businesses prior to a possible listing. Similar forums are currently being coordinated throughout the island, with this being the first done in Jaffna.
