Sharma confident Commonwealth will grow under Rajapaksa leadership

The Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa last morning at Water’s Edge to finalise arrangements for the post-CHOGM press conference. During the brief discussion, Sharma expressed hope that the extensive relationship between the Commonwealth and Sri Lanka will continue to strengthen during President Rajapaksa’s tenure as the Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth during next two years. President responded saying that Commonwealth must be active and do things tangible and beneficial to the peoples of countries of the organisation. Both President Rajapaksa and Sharma noted that CHOGM 2013 held in Sri Lanka received much more publicity than any previous one. Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Monitoring MP to the Ministry of External Affairs Sajin de Vaas Gunawardena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunatilake Amunugama, Chief of President’s Staff Gamini Senarath and Additional Secretary to the Ministry Kshenuka Seneviratne were also present.
