An activist Buddhist prelate in Sri Lanka has requested all political parties in the Sri Lankan Parliament to extend support to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Convener of the National Movement for a Just Society and the Chief Incumbent of the Kotte Sri Naga Viharaya Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero has requested all parties to vote in favor of the Amendment, symbolising a new journey in Sri Lankan society. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the Thero said it was the expectation of every citizen to abolish the Executive Presidency and those who vote against the Amendment would vote against the country.
“The harmful effects of power centering on an individual have been witnessed in the recent past. The Amendment is not a document drafted by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe,” the Ven. Thero said, stressing that discussions with the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) in this regarded were anticipated.
Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) General Secretary Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that his party would do everything possible to defeat the 19th Amendment to the Constitution as it was a plot by the Prime Minister to gain power.
However, the leader of Sri Lanka’s Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake came to the defence of the Prime Minister saying that Wickremesinghe should not be targeted over the current controversy on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution as it is not a “constitutional coup” planned by the PM.
