Southern Expressway segment to Matara to be opened in January

The Government has scheduled to declare open the second phase of Southern Expressway in January 2014. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the second phase of the expressway from Galle to Matara on 26 January 2014, Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Dullas Alahapperuma announced. According to the Minister, 90% of the construction work on highway has been completed by now and work is in progress to complete the two entry points. The four-lane highway being constructed at a cost of Rs. 25 billion will have two interchanges along the 35 kilometre distance between Galle and Matara. The two interchanges will be at Wathawana area in Galle Deniyaya Road and in Kokmaduwa along the Weligama Kananke Road. The funding is provided by the EXIM Bank of China and Road Development Authority. According to the Highways official, plans are afoot to further extend the expressway from Matara-Godagama to Hambantota Harbour via Beliatta, Andarawewa, and Mattala and feasibility studies for the proposed extension have already been completed.
