The Government has decided to adopt the Japanese standard ISDB-T for digital television broadcasting in the country. “Accordingly, all terrestrial television channels will be transmitted through a common digital broadcasting network using ISDB-T technology in the future,” Minister of Mass Media and Information Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday. He said many countries in the world tend to adapt to rapidly-changing technologies in order to avail their citizens with the benefits the latest technology offers. Consequently, a number of countries including European, Asian, African and American countries are introducing digital technology for television broadcasting. Keeping Sri Lanka on par with this current global phenomenon the Government has taken a policy decision to introduce digital technology for terrestrial television broadcasting. The introduction of digital technology for television broadcasting will promote the effective utilisation of frequency resources and will develop communication infrastructure for enhancing accessibility to a variety of information including disaster information, closed-caption broadcasting and multi-language broadcasting. It will ultimately contribute to the development of the ICT industry and to the improvement of information accessibility for vulnerable people.
