A nationwide poll conducted by TNS Lanka, for business magazine LMD, reveals that 75% of Sri Lankans believe that the country has “made the most of gaining independence.” The forthcoming edition of LMD also notes that “only 16% of those surveyed disagree with this sentiment, while a further 8% remain ‘unsure’.” LMD says that 52% of the people “also hold a positive opinion of how the local economy has performed since 1948, citing income levels and the development projects being implemented as evidence of the economic progress achieved by the country.   Around two-thirds of survey respondents believe that Sri Lankan society is better now than during colonial times, while 53% say that our culture “has evolved for the better,” since independence. Finally, says LMD, more than half of those consulted by TNS Lanka also feel that Sri Lankans are reaping the fruits of democracy. LMD’s publisher, Media Services, says that the February issue of the pioneering business magazine will be released to supermarkets and bookstores on Friday 6 February. Its cover story features an exclusive interview with Hillary Clinton.
