Sri Lanka and Peru have agreed to promote and enhance bilateral commerce and trade relations between the two countries.
Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Ambassador to Lima Raja Edirisuriya met with Peru’s Director General for the Americas Claudio De La Puente last month to discuss the potential for enhanced trade relations and the current economic situation of the two nations.
At the meeting, Ambassador La Puente invited a Sri Lankan trade delegation to visit Peru with the aim of establishing more business opportunities and the Sri Lankan envoy reciprocated with an invitation for a group of Peruvian officials to visit Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Business Forum, to be held on 12-14 November.
Ambassador Edirisuriya has said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has already extended an invitation to President Ollanta Humala to visit Sri Lanka for the Forum, Peru’s Andina news agency reported.
Edirisuriya has said that the event provides an opportunity to meet 54 heads of state from Commonwealth nations and participate in the Business Forum with over 2,000 business organisations.
Considering the role of Peru in the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Ambassador briefed on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka after the war, including the progress achieved in resettlement, rehabilitation of ex-combatants, and reconstruction of war-devastated regions and requested Peru’s support at the UN Human Rights Council.
The Non-Resident Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Peru presented his credentials to President Humala on 12 July, together with other seven envoys.
