Stanley Wijesundera’s son Dr. Rohan and Damien Fernando among new faces on Lanka Hospitals Board

Famous late Prof. Stanley Wijesundera’s son Dr. Rohan L. Wijesundera and Damien Fernando of Harry Jayawaradena Group are among new faces on the Board of Directors of The Lanka Hospitals Plc. Fernando served the Board previously from 2006 to 2009 when Harry J controlled Sri Lanka Insurance, which is the largest shareholder in Lanka Hospitals with a 54.6% stake. Fortis Global Healthcare of Singapore holds a 28.6% stake. Apart from Dr. Wijesundera and Damien, the other new Independent Non Executive Director appointed is Prof. Dilani Lokuhetty. Family medicine specialist Dr. Sarath Paranavitane was recently appointed as Chairman of Lanka Hospitals by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. Dr. Wijesundera is a Bachelor of Medicine Doctor who completed his training in the UK. He enjoyed a broad spectrum of practice in the hospital setting working in hospitals covering from Bournemouth in the South of England to Manchester in the North. His postgraduate career consisted of the Specialist Registrar Training on the North Thames London circuit in obstetrics and gynecology. He holds a Hotel School Diploma and has wide interest in the food and beverage and hotel industry. He spearheaded the setting up of several Colombo restaurants such as Flower Drum and Bali Indonesian. His interests also covers the encouragement of a greener future and is involved in the setting up of wind and hydropower projects in Sri Lanka. Prof. Stanley Wijesundera was the first Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University and the nephew of the late Upali Wijewardena. Damien Fernando MBA, CFMA (UK) is currently a Non Executive Director at Hatton National Bank. He has also held several Board positions in other listed companies such as Distilleries Company, Pelwatte Sugar Industries Plc and unlisted companies such as Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Melstacorp Ltd., Lanka Bell Ltd., and National Asset Management Ltd. Having qualified as an accountant in 1984, he was awarded a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1992 by the Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Prof. Dilani Lokuhetty, MBBS, PgCertMedEd, DipPath, MD Path (Histopath), MIAC, is Professor in Pathology and Consultant Pathologist, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. She worked as a Consultant Pathologist with 18 years of experience as a Consultant Histo/cytopathologist both in Sri Lanka and overseas. She has 23 years of experience in undergraduate teaching and assessment (medical and paramedical), and 18 years of experience in postgraduate teaching, training and assessment both in Sri Lanka and overseas. She was also a supervisor for DM, M. Phil and PhD degrees by research. She is a research grant recipient from the National Science Foundation and the National Research Council of Sri Lanka and a recipient of many research awards including the Presidential award for scientific publications. She is the Chairman of the Board of Study in Pathology, Postgraduate Pathology Training Program, Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo since July 2011 to date and was the Head of the Department of Pathology from August 2010 to 2013.
